Peaceful beginning of Lok Sabha Polls in Mangalore

Mangalore : Polling started across Mangalore at 7.00 am. Some polling booths reported heavy voting. Most of the members of the prominent parties cost their vote early in the morning
candidates Janardhana Poojari and Nalin Kumar Kateel exercised their franchise before 8 am. state minister Krishna Palemar, MLA Yogish Bhat, former minister B Nagaraj Shetty and others were also seen at the voting centres.

The polling officials were expecting that most of the polling will be over around mid day due to scorching heat, as in many of the polling booths there is no shelter and if there is a long queue it was unlikely that people will join the queue.

Leaders of various parties are confident that this time voting turnover will be more while comparing earlier elections.

DK, Udupi all set for LS polls

Mangalore : Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district is all set for Lok Sabha polls to be held on Thursday, April 30 with election machinery and Sec 144 in place.

DK district:
In 1,518 polling stations of DK a total of 7,500 direct staff will be on polling duty. In 1,470 polling stations SMS-based data collection will be done. District level control rooms have been set up with about 30 officers functioning. There are 11 landline numbers and 4 mobile numbers. The landline numbers are 08256-233123, 0824-2014082, , 0824-2444251, 0824-2451903, 0824-2421589, 0824-2444251, 08251-231905, 08257-230150. To avoid any problems due breakdown of service providers, the district administration has decided to used various service providers like the BSNL, Reliance and Tata Indicom, so that even if the server of one service is down there are other alternatives. Control rooms at the Assistant Returning Officer level have also been set up so that people can file complaints.

As many as 328 video cameras will be in place and 486 micro-observers other than direct staff will be deployed, especially at the booths identified as critical, sensitive and hyper-sensitive. This apart there is a 20 per cent reserve of polling officers to tackle emergency situations with extra EVMs too being provided to each polling stations so that in situation where EVMs fail to function, the error can be corrected in ten minutes. This apart, eight control rooms ARO-level has been set up and 133 sector officers and three MCC teams too will be on the move.

The staff on polling duty apart from postal ballots will also be able to exercise their votes, wherever they are on duty by obtaining election duty certificate.

Addressing media persons on Monday, April 27, he said that State government had released finds for Sarapady dam construction. However, Union government is yet to release funds, he said and added that Cong”s contribution to he development of the State is a big zero.

Palemar also assured to set up Western Ghat Research centre to stop the degradation of environment in the Western Ghats. BJP MP candidate Nalin Kumar Kateel and BJP District President K Monappa Bhandary were also present.

Special security in place in 162 polling stations under western range: DIG Hosur

Mangalore : Deputy Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Gopal Hosur on Tuesday, April 28 said that complete bandobast of Naxal-affected area in three districts, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikmagalur has been undertaken with special security in place.

Addressing media persons, Hosur said that the naxal influence is being witnessed under 20 police station limits and 81 villages. In a total of 162 polling stations special security by deploying 10 to 15 police personnel has been provided to enable about 1 lakh voters exercise their franchise without any fear. The police personnel have also been provide with adequate modern weapons, he said.

This apart, route survey in these area is being undertaken for every two to three hours with video cameras and thermal images made use of in the night. At the high altitude areas police stations have been set up. Further, personnel trained in ambush, counter attack and investigation have been deployed in anti-naxal force, he said.

Priestly Ordination for 3 new priests at Bajal Church

Mangalore : 3 Deacons ordained as priests on 28th April, 2009 at 3.30 pm by his Lordship Rt Rev Robert Michael Miranda, Bishop of Gulbarga Diocese. The Ordination ceremony was held at God the Holy Spirit church, Bajal, Mangalore in the presence of near and dear ones of the newly-ordained and hundreds of devotees. Several diocesan priests, nuns and religious brothers and sisters were present on the occasion.
