Mangalore : Regional university is the right institution to protect and promote the art and culture of the region, said Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Dayanand Pai and Satish Pai Yakshagana Research Centre at Yakshagana Kalakendra of Mangalore University at Konaje in Mangalore on Saturday, May 2. Though the institution like temples are doing their duty to promote the Yakshagana art, it is time that regional universities establish their responsibility and work to promote language, art and culture with greater interest. Universities should be restricted to giving away degree alone, but should exert their role in protecting the culture of the region. A region”s identity is its culture , he said.

Heggade observed that Yakshagana depicts our life and lifestyle. In a country if folk culture is alive it means the cuture is alive, he said. Modernisation and commercialisation of Yakshagana has been a bane. In this backdrop, universities shold protect the artistes as well as preserve Yakshagana in its true form to pass it on to the generation next, he said.
